From Sketch to Chair: Inside KABEL’s Product Development

An office chair begins with a series of design decisions. Its shape, support, adjustments and materials must work together while meeting the needs of the market it is intended for.

At KABEL, original design and tooling development are part of our approach to building office seating. Developing our own products gives us room to explore a consistent design language and bring new options to buyers.

Start with the Intended Use

A product brief should define who the chair is for, where it will be used and which price segment it needs to serve.

A task chair for a broad office furniture collection may have different priorities from a model intended for a more adjustable seating range. Establishing those priorities helps guide the design before individual components are selected.

Develop Form and Function Together

The backrest, seat, armrests and base need to feel visually connected. They also need to accommodate the chair’s intended functions.

During development, appearance must be considered alongside structure, component fit and assembly. A detail that looks attractive in a sketch still needs to work as a manufactured part.

Turn the Design into a Physical Product

Original components may require dedicated tooling. This makes development a longer-term investment, with decisions that influence both the final appearance and future production.

Physical samples provide an opportunity to assess proportions, seating feel, adjustment access and component fit. They also help identify details that need refinement before a specification is finalized.

Create More Possibilities for Buyers

For brands and distributors, a manufacturer’s own development capability can provide a starting point for a more distinctive collection.

KABEL’s range reflects our ongoing focus on office chair design. Available configurations and customization possibilities vary by model and can be discussed around your market requirements.
